Local is Lekker [The Jo’burg Diaries V]

Heyy guys! So I am swamped with studying for exams next week, i.e. I am staying in my room dreaming of cool coffee shops to visit while I procrastinate studying for math!

Almost two weeks ago, before exam pressure got too intense a friend and I decided check out the new coffee shop, ‘Bean There’, that opened up in Braamfontein, now we are terrible with directions and never actually found the coffee shop, I think we were on the wrong side of the street. So we actually ended up just wandering through the part of Braam close to the university. I’d seen what the places looked like when I’d been to the neighbourgoods market on Saturdays but I’d never actually gone into the shops. So what started as a coffee visit ended up being a real good eye-opener and we found a good coffee shop too!

Here are some snaps from our expedition…

If you live in South Africa, or have ever visited, you know that the Mr Price clothing store is uber popular and pretty much caters for everyone. They recently opened up shop in braam, with a cute denim themed pop up store. The store was trendy, yet not overdone and had just the perfect chilled vibe to hang out.

So this is actually kind of a funny story, we walked past this shop called ‘The Shop’, the standing at the door had a ginger beard and I love beards, so naturally I asked him to pose outside the store, against the display and red wall. Later, I posted the photo to my instagram and turns out the the guy was the owner, and the shop had only opened its doors that day.

Both The Shop and the Mr Price store are in what is known as 70 Juta Street. It was an old army surplus store but it was redone to house quite a few different shops. The entire setup is so unique and fresh!

So… we didn’t find Bean There, but, we did find Doubleshot, and their coffee is amazing!! We ordered 2 Vietnamese iced coffees. My mantra when ordering food at a new place is always order what you’ve never had. Sometimes its a fail but mostly it isn’t. On this day it was a huge success, the coffee was divine! It tasted so fresh, rich and full of flavour. I cant wait to try out more of their coffee. I also got some nachos coz a girl’s gotta eat. These were also oh so great, I hadn’t ever eaten black beans and they were surprisingly good!

At 82 Juta Street we came across a record store and they had everything from Sam Smith and Imagine Dragons to old Queen stuff. I can’t wait to own my own record player. There’s just such an authenticity to it.

All in all it was a great afternoon and well I can’t wait for exams to be over so I can actually find Bean There.

peace, love, rainbows and happy studying

P.S. All who wander are not lost, even if they think they are…
