Hey guys! I’m supposed to doing some form of uni work, but that isn’t going too well, so I here I am to tell you guys about the time I went to an art gallery. Sounds pretty boujee right? The last time I went near art, I’m sure I was in primary school and it had something to do with a school excursion. My lack of drawing and painting skills have always left me admiring the likes of Picasso or Monet. I’m the opposite of an art critic, if it looks aesthetically pleasing, I am here for it!
I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with Arts and Culture (AC) at school, I’m pretty sure they don’t even call it that anymore, but 8th my grade AC teacher was the worst. She was just mean and did not cultivate or inspire any kind of creativity. Somehow, I still remember a lot of our lessons, and I actually picked up a few names, Andy Warhol being one of them. Wasn’t that the longest intro?
The Wits Art Museum has had a part of the Andy Warhol collection for a few months. I had seen the poster while on the bus home one day and was flooded with memories of a mean teacher who had spoken to us about his colourful pop art screen techniques. After a few traumatizing seconds, I shook off the scary flashbacks and remembered how cool I had thought his work was. It took a while for me to go, but a Facebook event popped up and informed me about a free talk/walkabout at the museum and I basically had to go.
That was basically all I had to ramble about, but here are some of the awkward pictures of me interacting with art, they really don’t do the collection any justice!
You guys! These had glitter! They were obviously my favs!
And, my dress matched these so well (it’s from New Look)

I’m such an awkward human, this is why I don’t go to art galleries often.
Awkward is my new aesthetic.
I took a trip down some stairs and found some other cool art pieces, by African artists, a lot of them were pretty thought provoking and touched on South Africa’s history with racism. While apartheid may have been abolished 23 years ago, racism is still a prevalent issue in our country, white privilege and biases run rampant in society.
That’s all folks! Buuut, click that subscribe button so you hear about my newest posts first! If all goes well I may have two more posts this week!
SIDENOTE: I eventually got ’round to liking that teacher, well not dreading her class anyway, I’d like to think she didn’t hate students as much as she let on, and is hopefully a much nicer and kinder teacher now.
